Liverpool winning the Champions League semi-final is still haunting Barcelona legend Lionel Messi and it is a beautiful thing to watch.

Lionel Messi is the best player I’ve ever seen and probably the greatest footballer of all time. And Divock Origi broke him. The Barcelona legend is struggling to come to terms with how Liverpool knocked him out of the Champions League a few weeks ago.

Barca have struggled in Europe over the last few years as they have watched their fierce rivals Real Madrid pick up four of the last five Champions League titles. Their domestic success has the dark cloud of European failure hanging over it.

This year was their big chance. Madrid have been woeful, Man City and PSG had been knocked out and Liverpool were 3-0 from the first leg. Messi sensed the incredible opportunity to be European champion again and draw level with Ronaldo with five European Cups on his resumé.

But that game happened. Origi happened. Wijnaldum happened. Anfield happened like it has so many times before.

It is Liverpool who are playing in the biggest game in club football this Saturday. And Messi’s heart has been crushed. He has described it as “one of the worst experiences in my career”.

Barcelona have proceeded to get beaten by Valencia in the Copa del Rey last weekend only heightening the feeling that Liverpool broke this team in two.

Messi is (almost) guaranteed to be the top scorer in the Champions League this season but that brings him no comfort “What happened at Liverpool is in my head”.

After watching the diving and snideness from Messi and his Barca teammates over the two legs you can’t feel sorry for him. They got what they deserved. They were beaten by a better team.
