Transfer: Liverpool on the verge of signing defender says top journalist
By David Gate
Liverpool are on the verge of signing PEC Zwolle center back Sepp van den Berg according to one of the most trusted journalists.
Liverpool fans have been dreaming of a Dutch center back partnership all summer. They may just get their wish, except it isn’t Matthijs de Ligt on the brink of joining Virgil van Dijk but 17-year-old defender Sepp van den Berg.
The youngster made his debut for PEC Zwolle in The Netherlands last season and made 16 appearances in the Eredivisie. He has also featured for the Dutch Under-19’s squad.
The news that Liverpool are poised to sign van den Berg comes from Neil Jones of Goal.com. As former Liverpool ECHO journalist he has close ties the club and can be regarded as a reliable source for transfer info.
He would join countrymen Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum at Anfield although he would head straight to the Academy and reserve sides to develop for a few years. Perhaps the future of the Reds’ defense is Orange – fellow Dutch 17-year-old Ki-Jana Hoever is perhaps the most highly rated youngster at the club academy at present.
Many fans are hoping Liverpool make it five Dutchmen on the red half of Merseyside after strong transfer rumors this summer that club want to add Memphis Depay to the squad to boost Jurgen Klopp’s attacking options.
Having a strong Dutch contingent could well help convince Depay to make the move over to Anfield to join the Orange revolution in Klopp’s ranks.
There should be confirmation of the Sepp van den Berg story soon and we will be here to give you all the takes of the latest transfer updates!
