Liverpool vs Chelsea: Fabinho vs Jorginho and the battles that must be won
Fabinho vs Jorginho
Two midfield controllers will line up opposite each other on Sunday and both will be tasked with keeping possession, ticking things over and making sure their own side can play.
Liverpool will want to keep the ball in order to allow Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold to get down the flank and provide a threat that way.
In order to stop that, Jorginho will try and hustle, pass and plan his way to a Chelsea victory. Fabinho, with his octopus like omipresence in front of the back four, will be trying exactly the same thing.
The Brazilian will probably need to control Ross Barkley, Pedro and Willian as those three will look to support and provide Tammy Abraham with enough ammunition to hurt the Liverpool defence. But first the ball has to get to them, and that’s Jorginho’s job.
Klopp once thought that Adam Lallana could become better than the Chelsea man at that role, but we’ve not seen that this season. And on Sunday, Fabinho will need to beat the Italian in a battle that could decide the outcome of the fixture.
