Liverpool 2-1 Chelsea: Five positives as Firmino and Alexander-Arnold fire Reds to victory
Liverpool went to Chelsea and came away with a 2-1 win after goals from Roberto Firmino and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Here are five positives from the game.
Any time the Reds go away from home and beat one of the ‘Big Six’ there are going to be things that they did well and things that should encourage us as fans, but this result is even more pleasing as it makes it six from six and ticks off another three points against another top side.
Chelsea are not what they used to be but that doesn’t mean they won’t be challenging for Europe under Frank Lampard. They still have excellent players, even if the system still leaves them vulnerable at times.
It also means that the Reds have basically got through a tricky run of three fixtures without too much drama – the loss against Napoli isn’t ideal but it shouldn’t mean too much in the long run – and can now look forward to a fairly easily route in the League Cup as they take on MK Dons.
If one (or two) doesn’t get you the other will
Firmino’s header and Alexander-Arnold’s net breaker were both wonderful goals in their own right and continue Liverpool’s theme for the campaign – if one (or two) of the front three don’t get you, someone else will.
Bobby has now chalked up three goals and three assists from his six Premier League games and is enjoying a real purple patch. Only Sadio Mane has scored more than him this season, while the Brazilian is level with Mohamed Salah. Firmino would take that any day of the week, although the team comes first with him.
In fact, both African inside forwards had fairly subdued games by their high standards and it was pleasing to see others step up in their place when needed. Title winning sides are about the collective, not one or two stars and Liverpool clearly have it in their locker to produce the goods as an XI.
