Liverpool 2-1 Leicester: Luck? The lady wasn’t smiling yesterday
Luck? You’ve got it all wrong, the lady wasn’t smiling today as Liverpool beat Leicester 2-1 in the Premier League thanks to a last minute penalty.
Sure, it’s great to have luck. But you don’t want to need it and it’s not healthy to write off the achievements of a set of players based on a flimsy idea as luck.
Let’s get something straight: the James Milner penalty wasn’t down to luck. The referee called it, VAR confirmed it, Milner scored it. That’s not lucky, that’s following the laws of the game.
Whether you’re a VAR disciple or you think the technology should be burned at the stake and we should all go back to the days of dodgy decisions, you should be able to agree that Sadio Mane was legitimately fouled.
And while we’re on the subject of Mane, his goal wasn’t lucky either. The pass from Milner was inch perfect and a thing of beauty to watch, while the finish was never in any doubt. Mane has progressed into a world class talent and we all knew what the outcome of that shot would be.
No luck in that.
Throughout other areas of the pitch, Liverpool dominated. We had 18 shots on goal, Leicester had two. We had eight of those on target, the Foxes just one – and that was James Maddison‘s goal.
The trend continues: Liverpool won more tackles, completed more passes and won more dribbles. We also edged the possession count, with 51% of it.
There is a lot of talk about how Premier League winners need luck if they’re able to clinch the crown, and that may certainly be true. Liverpool have had some in other areas, especially with Manchester City’s recent injury record, but none of that directly relates to how the boys perform on the field.
Lady Luck? Never heard of her, mate. And on Saturday’s evidence she’s never heard of Liverpool either.
