Dejan Lovren started his first Premier League game for Liverpool on Saturday as Jurgen Klopp outsmarted Brendan Rodgers to beat Leicester City 2-1.

Lovren was in the side because of Joel Matip’s injury and Joe Gomez’s worrying display against Salzburg in the Champions League three days earlier.

The Croatian World Cup finalist had featured once before in 2019/2020 as Liverpool kept a clean sheet and beat MK Dons 2-0 in the Carabao Cup, but his selection was slightly out of leftfield as Klopp opted to drop Gomez.

Lovren has been with the Reds since his £22.77 million move from Southampton in 2014 but his future has started to look increasingly questionable. The 30-year-old was the subject of repeated transfer interest from Serie A sides, but a move away from Merseyside never materialized.

That shouldn’t automatically mean his association with Liverpool has to end. Fans have grown to have a curious relationship with Degsy, who is prone to moments of high class defending sandwiched between pure horror show stuff.

He’s a bit of a Simon Mignolet, a bit of a six-or-seven times out of 10 defender, and that’s not really good enough for a club with aspirations like Liverpool have.

However, Lovren can still have a future at Anfield. Read below and click through the slides to read about three reasons why this is, and don’t forget to let us know what your opinion is by leaving us a comment at the bottom of the article.
