The Reds coasted to an early lead thanks to two Virgil van Dijk headers – both assisted by Trent Alexander-Arnold, but that nearly came crashing down thanks to a moment of madness from Alisson in goal.
On a day when Manchester City could only draw with Newcastle United, picking up all three points at home was even more important but the Brazilian’s red card for handling the ball outside the area nearly spoiled the afternoon.
Lewis Dunk scored from the subsequent free-kick while replacement Adrian was still assembling his defensive wall and made the final moments of the game more nervous than it had any right to be.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain replaced Fabinho in midfield and Alexander-Arnold came in for Joe Gomez on the right, but otherwise Liverpool played their usual first choice side. That meant Dejan Lovren kept his place in the side because of Joel Matip‘s injury woe and the Croatian has grown in stature with each successive performance.
