CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has revealed that Bayern Munich missed out on signing Liverpool star Sadio Mane in a decision that changed history.

Goal reported that Rummenigge said the Bavarian giants wanted to bring Mane to the club when he was at Salzburg. But the Bundesliga titans missed out on the deal to Premier League side Southampton and then watched as the forward slipped out of their grasp forever.

After 45 goals and 32 assists for Salzburg in just 87 games, the Saints came calling and he stepped up to the top flight with ease. 14 assists and then 25 goals in 75 games earned him a big move to Liverpool and vast improvement under Jurgen Klopp.

Mane is now one of the best wingers in the world as he’s improved his confidence and finishing ability. The Senegal international was the joint-top goal scorer in the Premier League last season alongside Liverpool team mate Mohamed Salah, and he’s started this campaign on a similar note.

Eight goals and four assists in 14 games has led Sadio Mane to the top of the club scoring charts, while Salah has just six.

Mane would have been the perfect man for Munich right now, who are struggling to replace Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery as the inverted wingers that defined a generation of play.

“We had an interest in Mane, but somehow it didn’t work out. Then he went to Southampton, and later Liverpool. Pity,” Goal reported that Rummenigge complained.

Bayern are currently struggling in the Bundesliga as they find themselves four points off the top of the table as they’ve lost two out of their last five games. They recently sacked Niko Kovac after they lost 5-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt, who recently beat Arsenal to end the reign of Unai Emery.
