No.7 – Jordan Henderson
After impressing for Sunderland in the 2009/10 and 2010/11 seasons, Kenny Dalglish signed Jordan Henderson in 2011 for a transfer fee of £16 million plus add ons.
Since then, the midfielder has been a regular for the Reds and took the captain’s mantle after Steven Gerrard retired. The 29-year-old has made 341 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 26 goals and providing 46 assists and is the longest-serving member of this squad.
When you’re taking the armband from Gerrard who is widely considered to be the club’s greatest player of all-time, there’s bound to be a lot of pressure on you. However, Henderson has handled the responsibility very well despite being on the receiving end of immense criticism from many including Liverpool fans.
The England international is criminally underrated, even among Liverpool fans. Despite regualr Twitter proclamations that he ‘isn’t good enough’ he’s led the club to two Champions League finals, one European cup and a record Premier League points total.
Klopp loves him and he trusts him.
We can always see Henderson’s character, determination and energy on the pitch and has always had an excellent first touch. He is a decent passer and an even better crosser of the ball. Now Klopp is using Henderson on the right-hand side of central midfield (rather at the base where he struggled) he is able to link up well with Salah and Alexander-Arnold.
Emlyn Hughes. Graeme Souness. Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson. They are your Liverpool European Cup winning captains and all of them are legends.
