The top 10 best Liverpool players of the 2010s
By David Gate
No.4 – Steven Gerrard
The story of Steven Gerrard and Liverpool is too much for just 250 words to explain. You know the story of local boy becomes club legend – a club he only left for two years, came back to as a coach and then departed to take up his first managerial job with Rangers in Glasgow.
There is a glorious homecoming story to be written about when he eventually takes up the reigns at Anfield, as so many of us hope he will, but for now we need to concentrate on what he did running the midfield.
As his peak Gerrard was among the best in the world. And he had perfect hair, all the time. He also played 710 games for the club, scored 186 goals and assisted 115.
And then there was the leadership, the driving runs from midfield, the long shots and the passes. Gerrard was the complete package, one of the best players of his generation and he’s one of our own.
Choosing the best 10 players of the decade is never going to be an easy job but this is one of the easiest picks. He may have left the club in 2015 but those first five of the decade are enough to cement this place in this line up.
And to be honest, Liverpool have had loads of good midfielders, lots of functional midfielders, lots of midfielders who get their head down and get the job. Right now, Gerrard is the only world-class option we’ve had in the engine room this decade.
