Liverpool beat Everton 5-2 in a rampant Merseyside Derby on Wednesday night. Here are five things we learned from the game.

Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri struck twice in quick succession to give the Reds an early 2-0 lead, before Michael Keane took advantage of some confusion in the box to prod home and give the Toffies a brief glimmer of hope.

But Origi struck again following a remarkable pass from Dejan Lovren before Sadio Mane grabbed a fourth before half time. Richarlison shouldered home just before half time to take the deficit to two but it would be to no avail as the score ended 5-2.

A largely forgettable second half heated up in the last 10 minutes as Mane missed two excellent opportunities, one open goal as he rounded Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, but then Georginio Wijnaldum scored a lovely curler following some superb work from substitute Roberto Firmino.

Jurgen Klopp surprised fans with his team selection as the German chose to leave Jordan Henderson, Firmino and Mohamed Salah out of the starting side and give Shaqiri, Origi and Adam Lallana some game time.

The win extends Liverpool’s superiority over Everton and gives the boys some excellent momentum going into the Bournemouth game on Saturday. Eddie Howe’s side are in a bad run of form and this is now the perfect time to play Harry Wilson’s loan side.

But before the weekend, we need to digest what happened during the Merseyside Derby. Click through the slides below to read five things we learned during the game.
