Everton were humiliated by a rampant Liverpool at Anfield as Divock Origi hit two as the Reds beat the Blues 5-2

These two sides have never started a Merseyside Derby so far apart in the league and the difference between the two sides was instantly apparent as the home side attacked the Toffies with energy, commitment and Andy Robertson taking up an extremely advanced position.

This is a game that’s produced more red cards than any other fixture in Premier League history, but the only thing it produced in the first six minutes with a goal for Origi as he was handed another Merseyside Derby goal by Sadio Mane’s inch perfect, curling pass that enabled Origi to take the ball around Jordan Pickford with one touch and finish with the next.

Liverpool are a much better side and that was obvious for Xherdan Shaqiri’s goal and the second of the night. Trent Alexander-Arnold started it off with one of his terrific, nonchalant cross-field balls straight to the feet of Mane.

Mane drove into the box, drew his man and hit a beautiful little reverse pass straight into the path of Shaqiri – who darted from right to left across the box and collected his gift wrapped assist. The finish looked easy but we’ve seen them missed as the former Stoke man hit his across Pickford and into the back of the net.

Despite going 2-0 down inside 20 minutes, the Toffies failed to give up hope and Michael Keane made the most of Dejan Lovren’s small mistake and rifled home from close range. Alisson, Adrian, it doesn’t seem to matter. Liverpool just can’t keep a clean sheet at the moment and it’s clearly bothering the defenders.

Origi added his second of the night after an improbable, but stunning, Lovren pass picked him out on the edge of the area. The first touch was textbook, the second clinical as the Belgian lobbed Pickford.

Everton had their moments but couldn’t get anywhere near another goal as Lovren added a goal saving interception – with his toes to divert the ball around the attack – and moments later Alexander-Arnold drove down the left hand side, touched it on to Mane who hit it first time with the instep of his left foot and curled it into the net to make it four.

Liverpool celebrated, Everton fought amongst themselves and Silva crumpled and was left emotionless – even when Richarlison shouldered home his first of the game just before the end of the first 45.

A fairly drab, boring second half should have been rounded off with a second for Mane following a long ball over the top of the defence but the Senegal legend somehow missed the goal with only Pickford to beat. It’s the type of miss we thought Mane had got out of his system and he managed to repeat himself after rounding Pickford and making a huge mess of the finish, but thankfully it wouldn’t cost Liverpool any points.

Liverpool v Everton player ratings: Origi crushes the Toffees. Again.. dark. Next

After no action for 35 minutes, it suddenly all burst into life after Mane’s first miss. Moise Kean then spurned his own opportunity and then Wijnaldum got his goal after some brilliant feet from Firmino, who turned Mason Holgate inside and out, allowed the Brazilian to square it to Wijnaldum who opened his body up and curled it home.
