Liverpool: The 10 best LFC transfers of the 2010s
By David Gate
7. Daniel Sturridge
In January of 2013, Liverpool brought in forward Daniel Sturridge in from Chelsea for the small sum of £12 million. He was a surplus for the London club but had shown incredible potential. In 14 appearances in the remainder of that season, Sturridge scored ten goals for the Reds. His importance for the club just grew from there.
The following season, Sturridge would link up with Luis Suarez to form the SAS partnership. The pair would combine for 52 of Liverpool’s 101 goals on the season.
His greatest goal, at least in my opinion, came against Everton in January of that 2013-14 season. After club legend Steven Gerrard gets Liverpool ahead, Philippe Coutinho lobs a pass into the streaking Sturridge who lobs it over Tim Howard and into the empty goal.
He wasn’t a local lad, but the Birmingham native might-as-well had with the way fans took to him. That dance after goals could rub some people the wrong way, but off the pitch, he seemed humble and thankful for the opportunity to play in the best league and for the biggest club.
Sturridge ended up playing 116 league appearances with the Reds scoring 50 goals, another three goals in 13 FA Cup appearances, nine goals in nine League Cup appearances, and five goals in 22 European competitions. That’s 67 goals from 160 total appearances and he left as European Cup winner. All for £12 million. Incredible.
