Robertson is a proper defender

Much of the conversation about our full-backs centres on their attacking ability and seems to brush over their work at the back. Trent Alexander-Arnold was average against Wolves, it must be said, but his mate on the opposite flank was not.

Andy Robertson has been rightly praised for his ability going forward, but the Scotland international was faced with the unenviable task of keeping Adama Traore quiet and he delivered beautifully.

Traore is a pure machine and it’s no surprise that the former Barcelona man is the most fouled player in the Premier League. With that pace and dribbling ability, he’s a nightmare to defend against. But Robertson did it without much concern, without much fuss and he completely nullified the attacking threat from the Wolves man.

Robertson might have fallen behind Alexander-Arnold in the assist tally (eight to five) but he’s above the Scouse youngster in terms of defensive ability. Against Wolves he made three tackles, two interceptions and a clearance as Trent made just one tackle and one interception.

In the age of attacking full-backs, that might not be as important, but when you play the biggest sides for the highest stakes you need to be confident in your defenders ability to defend.
