Sheffield couldn’t deal with Virgil van Dijk

With Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk at the back, the Reds have looked unstoppable and have now kept five league clean sheets in a row. After all those defensive worries, Liverpool have accumulated the best defence in the league and have let in just 14 goals in 20 games.

Van Dijk and Gomez are so strong, so quick and so good with the ball at their feet that oppositions can’t find a way through – but the Dutchman is also a complete danger at the other end. Just look how badly Sheffield dealt with him at corner kicks.

Any chance the Blades got, they were all over Virgil. He must have been smelling lush because the defenders at set pieces were all over the Dutchman, arms wrapped all around him, hauling him this way and that. On other days they would have given away penalties but not today.

It was the actions of a side who is terrified to give van Dijk a step as the ball was swung in, because they know how good he is with his head and how much damage he can do if allowed to attack the ball unimpeded. A clean sheet and a menace in front of goal? Van Dijk can chalk off another excellent day at Anfield.
