Liverpool 1-0 Everton: Five things we learned – Minamino will get stuck in
Neco Williams could be Trent Alexander-Arnold’s back-up
Williams and Alexander-Arnold seem to be all schooled the same way as the 18-year-old spent much of the game storming down the right flank, playing little passes behind the defence and swinging in threatening crosses to the far post.
Williams pressed really well and displayed some good understanding with Elliot as well as making a couple of crucial interceptions. The defender also showed he can hit them as well as his former Academy mate as one drive rose fast and hard and stung the palms of Pickford.
It’s been a tough introduction to life in the first team for the right-back, who made his first start against Arsenal and did well – despite the team conceding five. Everton could bring pace and skill down his side and the introduction of Bernard in the second half was testament to the strong squad Ancelotti brought to Anfield.
Alexander-Arnold is the first choice right-back, we all know that. But there is no reason why Williams can’t play a back-up role going forward next season. He’s already done well against two Premier League strength attacks, has a great coaching staff behind him and knows how the club like to play their football.
It showed in his style and confidence on the ball and we could see it more going forward.
