Defenders

Defender. Liverpool. NECO WILLIAMS. 7. Williams started where he left off against Arsenal with another promising performance. He intercepted well, didn’t let the occasion over-awe him and got forward with intent. Williams also sent a number of dangerous balls into the box towards the far post and each one looked dangerous as well as keeping the Everton left-side quiet. An excellent performance.

JOE GOMEZ. 8. Displayed good pace but was left marshalling the back four on his own as Milner limped off early. The new partnership with Phillips was tested by the Toffies forward line, who were wasteful with their chances. He was strong in the tackle, as you have to be for these games, and carried out of defence with purpose as well playing a number of fine passes.. Defender. Liverpool

7. The newly recalled Phillips made one massive, perfectly timed challenge on Richarlison, which delighted the crowd as he settled into the game. Phillips and Gomez struggled to deal with Theo Walcott, who played centrally and troubled the whole defence, but that only lasted for the first 45 as Phillips was rock solid after that. He did well to prevent a goal at the very end of half-time, too.. Defender. Liverpool. NAT PHILLIPS

6. Milner limped off after 10 minutes and left Yasser Larouci, no debut, against the jet-heeled Walcott. He pulled the youngster this way and that and should have had better end product for his efforts. Larouci looked to attack whenever the opportunity presented itself and did okay in defence..
