The beginning of the end for Adrian and Loris Karius has begun after Liverpool were linked with the transfer of a Turkish goalkeeper.

Michael Edwards and Jurgen Klopp are planning for the future and it doesn’t include the pair of reserves. At least, that’s what we can take from the news that the Reds are interested in signing Trabzonspor stopper Uğurcan Çakır.

For Karius, this is par for the course. The German is clearly not part of first team plans and has spent the last two seasons on loan with Besiktas. Out of sight, out of mind.

The latest news indicates he might be involved in a swap deal for the Super Lig target – although Karius has talked about his desire to play for Liverpool again.

The interesting side effect of this would be how Adrian would deal with the news. He’s been in fine form whenever he was called upon this year.

The Spaniard is 33-years-old, but for a reserve stopper he could operate at a Premier League level for the next few years while Kamil Grabara and Caoimhín Kelleher develop.

Çakır is only 23-years-old and if this deal goes through it would be Klopp and Liverpool hanging their hat on the Turk being a reliable understudy for Alisson for some time. It would also mean the Turk sacrificing a good portion of his days to come and sit on the bench and have a few cup games, and you have to question the mentality of a player who is willing to do that.

But most of all, it doesn’t seem fair or sensible for the Reds to buy in someone when they have a player who is already doing a good job in that role (Adrian) and two young prospects who can come through the ranks and provide a homegrown option (Grabara and Kelleher).
