And they pay the bills

You think about Wijnaldum now and you don’t think about a man with skills to pay the bills. Klopp has tuned a large part of his attacking instincts out of him and now the Dutchman is more of a recycler in possession than a fabulous attacker.

But the former Newcastle United man still has enough in his locker to provide a threat or the odd turn to get himself out of trouble when the time comes. He proved that against Manchester United.

On one occasion Wijnaldum found himself close to his own box with United players all around him. Three started to hunt him down as the smelled a cheap dispossession and a chance to attack a disorganized defence.

But then the Dutchman calmly put the ball through Fred’s legs and cleared the danger without a second thought.

A second example shows him leaving Harry Maguire for dead as the England defender tried to step in and stop a promising Liverpool counter. Wijnaldum isn’t just neat passing and keeping the game ticking, he’s also got flair and panache and we certainly learned that about him on Sunday.

Now if only Klopp would give him a bit more license at times…
