Gini Wijnaldum might not wear the captain’s armband but there is no doubting the fact that he’s a leader and steps up when required. The only game he’s lost in the last 12 months and 42 outings was the 3-0 defeat to Barcelona, but the midfielder stepped up and scored twice in that incredible turnaround.

And on Sunday, Wijnaldum showed why Klopp trusts him so much by putting in a season-defining performance against a United side that always seem to get under the skin of Liverpool.

Henderson might have been named man of the match but Gini ran him close and was a constant menace throughout the 90 minutes. He almost had a goal, too, but got just the wrong side of an offside decision.

It was a beautiful performance from a man who knows his role in this side like the back of his hand and we can all be confident that he won’t be letting us down for the big games any time soon. Bring on the next round of the Champions League because you can be sure Wijnaldum will be the first name on the team sheet and one guaranteed to put in a massive performance.
