Liverpool legend Steve Nichol wants manager Jurgen Klopp to think again after the latest transfer developments.

The Echo reported that Nichol has questioned why Klopp wants to sign RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner, in light of the news that Anfield was his ‘preferred destination.’

Sky Sports wrote that, if the German were to leave for the Premier League, he’d want to play for Liverpool. This only served to fuel the flames of one of the longest running transfer sagas in recent years while Werner linked to a number of clubs over the past 12-18 months.

With a £51 million release clause, there are a handful of sides who would jump at the chance to sign the clinical forward at the end of the season – but Nichol doesn’t think Liverpool should be one of them.

"“I just don’t see how Timo Werner would want to go to Liverpool if he wants to play regularly. That’s the problem,” he said."

And you have to admit, the man does have a point. Roberto Firmino isn’t going to be dislodged as the central forward while Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah are going nowhere. To fit all four into the side would require a formation change, which Klopp is reluctant to do.

But if the manager has his eyes on Werner, there will be thinking and a plan behind it. Liverpool do not just sign anyone willy-nilly, they are always measured and considered in their approach and this could be a successful move.

Perhaps with James Milner moving towards the end of his career, Adam Lallana set to leave the club and the injury worries of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita, Klopp is thinking about employing a 4-2-3-1 system in order to mix things up a bit.

Werner would be an excellent man for that, with Firmino in behind.
