Jurgen Klopp said he won’t manage the side nor will any of the senior players be available to face the League One side, which means Neil Critchley’s U23s will be living their Merseyside dream as they try to advance to the fifth round.

Whether that means players like Neco Williams and Harvey Elliot will be able to play is unsure, but you’d imagine they’d still be classed as members of the youth squad and will face the Shrews again. Caoimhín Kelleher has also played well when called upon, but the lack of experience will be the biggest threat to Liverpool’s fifth round prospects.

Regardless, it will be interesting for the fans in Anfield and Liverpool supporters around the world to be able to watch the next generation in action. It’s a shame that Klopp won’t let Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip, Adam Lallana, Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi take part – these are players who need minutes in their legs.

But it is what it is and we have to get around it. This is still a Reds team and they still deserve our support – even more so given their young age and inexperience.

Imagine what a full, loud Anfield could do for these U23 players, players who are taking their first steps in the professional game. It’s a unique opportunity for them and it could do them good.
