Liverpool starlet Neco Williams have a very important decision to make after he starred for the club in their Carabao and FA Cup runs.

The Mirror has reported that Wales and England are going to put pressure on the right-back to chose them as the nations embark on an international tug-of-war.

Neco Williams was born in Wrexham but has English grandparents and so could play for either country. Ryan Giggs is said to be a fan of the Liverpool lad and could hand him his first senior call-up, said the newspaper, while Three Lions U20 manager Paul Simpson watched him take on Shrewsbury at Anfield.

There is an excellent chance that Jurgen Klopp will use Williams as Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s back-up for the 2020/2021 season as James Milner ages and Joe Gomez looks more and more settled playing in central defence.

But he would be behind a host of stars if Williams chose England. Kyle Walker, Alexander-Arnold, Kieran Trippier, Max Aarons, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Reece James are all competing for the same place on the pitch – and competition is fierce.

Giggs has shown that he isn’t afraid to give youth a chance, nor are Wales. Ben Woodburn already has a few international caps under his belt, while Harry Wilson and Ethan Ampadu have been selected early in their careers.

International fights for players with dual heritage aren’t rare. Anyone remember the fuss that surrounded Adnan Januzaj‘s breakthrough when he was a promising attacker at Manchester United?

What it proves is his ability. Scouts have flocked to watched Neco Williams, who took apart Arsenal in that epic Carabao Cup game, while the right-back continued with his consistent performances in subsequent FA Cup and League Cup outings.

He’s one of the bright sparks to come out of this campaign, and we’re all excited to see how he develops in the future. Watching what international jersey he pulls on is only a small part of that.
