1-1,1-1,1-0, 2-1: Reliving past encounters between Liverpool and Atletico Madrid
After beating Norwich 1-0 at Carrow Road, Liverpool resume their Champions League campaign as the knockout stages are about to begin.
The reigning European champions take on Atletico Madrid in their knockout tie. Diego Simeone‘s side haven’t had a very good season so far as they are fourth in the La Liga table with 40 points, 13 behind leaders Real Madrid. Atleti could also be without some of their important players for the tie.
Liverpool have been in terrific form this season so far, losing only two matches across all competitions. Given their present situation, Jurgen Klopp’s side seem the favorites to beat Los Rojiblancos and advance to the quarterfinals.
Wednesday’s first leg will be the fifth meeting between Liverpool and Atletico Madrid. Both sides have met each other on four previous occasions, twice in the Champions League and as many times in the Europa League.
Now, let’s take a look at how Liverpool fared in those past encounters.
1-1 at Vicente Calderon Stadium, October 2008
The first meeting between Liverpool and Atleti dates more than 11 years back when the two sides met in a Champions League group game. The venue was Los Rojiblancos’ home ground at the time, the Vicente Calderon Stadium. Both sides were coming into the match at the back of wins against Marseille and PSV Eindhoven.
Robbie Keane opened the scoring for Liverpool after only 14 minutes and had a good chance to score another goal but he failed to get anything on Steven Gerrard’s cross.
Maniche looked to have equalised for Atleti in the 55th minute but his goal was ruled out for offside. The La Liga side eventually found their equaliser thanks to the Portuguese international Simao Sabrosa who scored in the 83rd minute.
