1-1 at Anfield, November 2008

Almost two weeks after playing out a 1-1 draw in Madrid, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid locked horns at Anfield. Keane had a very good chance to put the Reds ahead after he brought down a long ball with his chest but his shot was wide.

Atleti opened the scoring in the 37th minute after Antonio Lopez‘s pass found club captain and future Liverpool man Maxi Rodriguez who slotted the ball past goalkeeper Pepe Reina. Liverpool had their chances to equalise, Daniel Agger in particular whose header from Gerrard’s free-kick went over the crossbar.

It looked like the Reds would face their first defeat of the season’s Champions League but they were awarded a penalty in the dying moments of the game after Mariano Pernia fouled Gerrard. The club captain stepped up and found the net to salvage a point for his team.

Liverpool eventually won their group without losing a single game but where eliminated by Chelsea in the quarter-finals. Atleti also qualified with an unbeaten record but they lost to Porto in the last 16.
