0-1 at the Vicente Calderon Stadium, April 2010

Both Liverpool and Atletico Madrid were unable to qualify from the group stages in the 2009/10 Champions League and had to settle for a place in the knockout stages of the Europa League.

However, both sides were doing well in the tournament and reached the semi-finals. While Liverpool beat Unirea Urziceni, Lille and Benfica, Atleti prevailed over Galatasaray, Sporting CP and Valencia.

The first leg took place at the Vicente Calderon Stadium in Madrid and it took just nine minutes for the hosts to open the scoring. A cross from Jose Manuel Jurado found Diego Forlan who after failing to head it, slotted it past Reina through his left foot.

Liverpool’s Yossi Benayoun found the net but his effort was ruled out for offside. Eventually, Atleti got the win which remains their only one over the Reds so far.
