The internet has exploded as RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner ‘confirmed’ his Liverpool transfer in a post-match press conference.

Twitter went wild with theories that the German striker had rubber-stamped his summer move to Merseyside following glowing comments to reporters.

Timo Werner scored from the penalty stop but missed some good chances as RB Leipzig beat Tottenham Hotspur in the first round of their Champions League clash, and afterwards couldn’t speak highly enough about Liverpool.

This follows a pleasing trend of the brightest talents from world football complimenting the work that Jurgen Klopp is doing at Anfield.

Liverpool have been extensively linked with Werner and this will only add fuel to the fire. Bayern Munich may have lost their chance to sign the Leipzig man forever after backing out of the deal last summer – but the Bavarian’s loss could result in Reds gain.

We would be able to afford the explosive forward, no doubt. We’re in excellent financial shape and will bank a windfall from any sales Michael Edwards negotiates in the summer. Xherdan Shaqiri, Divock Origi, Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana could all be at threat and that will free up squad space, wage money and bring in transfer fees.

He’s only 23, but Werner has already played over 200 Bundesliga games and boasts an excellent record of 83 goals and 37 assists. He’s been on fire this season with 20 strikes from just 22 appearances and is one of the most feared forwards in Germany.

At Liverpool, the German wouldn’t be as regular a starter and Klopp would have to devise a rotation policy or formation that can keep him plus Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah happy. No easy task.

But to the best you can’t afford to stand still. Werner doesn’t stand still, and he knows Melwood would be the perfect place for him.
