Liverpool have confirmed the three-year deal for an attacker that will kick in at the end of the season.

The Times northern football correspondent Paul Joyce has tweeted the news, which shows how good the club have become at planning for the future.

Academy starlet Harvey Elliott will move onto his new contract when he turns 17, which will run until 2023 and will secure the talent for Merseyside for that period.

Elliott moved to Liverpool from Fulham at the beginning of this season and has impressed when given the chance in the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup. Despite his young age, the attacker has played with maturity and confidence and looks to be a real talent for the future.

It’ll be really interesting to see what Jurgen Klopp decides to do with Harvey Elliott next season. Now he’s signed professional terms, the starlet will be allowed to go on loan and play regular first team football elsewhere.

But if Xherdan Shaqiri and Harry Wilson are sold, there could be room around the squad for the youngster to play a back-up role to the first team. He could then stay around Kirkby, learning from world-class talent like Mohamed Salah and being coached by the best in the world.

Some might argue that would be better for a 17-year-old’s development than playing League One or Championship football.

Whatever they decide is the best path for Harvey Elliott, Liverpool fans will have to wait before we see the best of him in action. Career development is a strange thing. Some players skyrocket like Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho, others hit the ground running very quickly before fading away badly – see Federico Macheda as an example.

Hopefully Elliott can avoid the pitfalls that Macheda succumbed to and forge himself a long and successful life at Liverpool.
