Defense

4. . . . Neco Williams

What was he doing on the Barkley goal exactly? He just let up on covering him. There’s such a thing as gap control. You can’t give any player, let alone someone of Barkley’s quality that much time and space in front of goal. After today, that should be abundantly clear for Williams.

He’s only 18 years old, so mistakes in his game were inevitable. But unfortunately, they came at a crucial point in the game.

6. . . . Virgil Van Dijk

Van Dijk was typically solid in front of Adrian. On the first goal, van Dijk did what was necessary for that situation and let Adrian see the shot. Unfortunately, that backfired tremendously.

Add four interceptions and five clearances and Van Dijk was busy. Too bad his efforts went to waste with a loss.

Joe Gomez . 5. . .

He got crossed up with Williams on the second goal. He though the kid was going to cover Barkley as he got to the top of the box and let up. Williams thought Gomez would pick up the former Everton man. The rest is history as Barkley converted the shot to put Chelsea up 2-0.

. . . Andrew Robertson. 5

He was getting forward and getting crosses into dangerous areas. Of his 12 crosses, he was accurate with five. He held a team-high three key passes on the day. Robertson was good. Too bad those around him weren’t to the same standard.
