Liverpool 5-0 Nottingham Forest

This game has been described as one of the best exhibitions of football ever and the team that carried it out were packed with greats.

Peter Beardsley, John Barnes, Ray Houghton, John Aldridge. What a team this was.

‘The Match of the Century’ was the third time in two weeks these two clubs had met and Liverpool were not in the mood to respect their opponents. The Reds were 11 points clear at the top of the table and they showed it with this brilliant display of attacking football.

Forest, managed by their legend Brian Clough, had already beaten this side the week before in the FA Cup semi-final and now Kenny Dalglish’s men were out for revenge.

Beardsley, Barnes and Aldridge were in the mood to make Forest cry and repeatedly cut through their defence to help the side to a massive victory over these huge rivals.

But despite the amount of first-half pressure, Liverpool only went in 2-0 up at the break. But then the floodgates opened.

The fifth was scored in the 88th minute, which shows the level of attacking intent Liverpool sustained the whole night. They weren’t just content to score three and protect a clean sheet – they came at Forest in wave after wave after wave.
