Liverpool 5 Alaves 4

What a crazy, crazy game this was but what a way to win a European final. Liverpool went 2-0 up after just 16 minutes thanks to goals from Markus Babbel and Steven Gerrard – which were described by the Guardian as ‘all quite boring.’

But the Spanish side weren’t going to be there to make up numbers and they didn’t feel like being whipping boys. They grabbed one back, but then conceded a penalty on the stroke of half time and Gary McAllister made it 3-1 to the Reds.

However, strikes in the 48th and 50th minute meant that this tie was…tied as Liverpool had blown a two goal lead just after half time.

There’s only one thing for it: more goals.

And that’s what Robbie Fowler did has McAllister provided for God – who smashed home what everyone hoped would be the winner.

But Alaves had different ideas and nodded a header past Sander Westerveld in the 89th minute to level this mad, mad game at 4-4 as extra time and the golden goal awaited.

Next, two red cards meant Liverpool were playing against nine and finally and own goal sealed things for the Reds – who secured their treble and played out an incredible cup final for us all.
