Chris Lawler

Our next legendary right fullback and the first of the modern generation is Chris Lawler. He joined the Reds in 1963, made 549 appearances and scored 61 goals.

Known as ‘the Silent Knight’, Lawler was the prototype of the modern marauding, roving, footballing full-back that would characterize the position for a generation to come. At 30 years of age, he played in every single match of the 1972-73 season; a whopping 66 matches across all competitions.

This era was the first of its kind, which saw full-backs running deep down the wings gliding into channels and space as part of a designed attack. Overlapping runs in to the end line would become a necessary requirement as this evolution progressed through the 60’s and 70’s.

Our next legend came to Liverpool in 1974 and was asked to fill Lawler’s boots.
