Phil Neal

Phil Neal arguably the greatest right back to ever grace the pitch in a Liverpool jersey, was a giant of the game.

He signed for the club for £66,000 from Northampton Town – the value! He’d already had about 200 appearances under his belt and was bought as Bob Paisley’s first signing at Liverpool.

Neal made an incredible 650 appearances and 59 goals, and I think if Trent Alexander-Arnold ever reaches those numbers he’ll be celebrated! 417 of them were consecutive, which is a record I don’t think will ever be beaten. Neal is a true Liverpool legend in all senses of the word.

It was during this era of Liverpool that saw Phil Neal and Emlyn Hughes dominate their defensive fullback roles as the two best tandem full-backs of all time in Reds jerseys.
