Alou Diarra // Bayern Munich // Free

Alou Diarra was another player signed on a free who never went on to make a competitive appearance for the club.

The player himself says the move came too soon, as reported 90min.com: “My first experience in England, with Liverpool, it was far too early and I didn’t have enough experience to go abroad.”

Between 2002-2005, Diarra made three loan appearances back to his native France before leaving permanently to Lens.

Diarra would go on to have a fairly decent, if not nomadic, career across France and England but was never going to make the grade at Anfield.

Bernard Diomede // Auxerre // £3,000,000

For the amount of money and a World Cup winner’s medal under his belt, you’d expect more from Bernard Diomende than he was able to deliver.

He’d already played 175 games for Auxerre, but only managed five at Liverpool over a three year period but failed to score a single goal and left on a free transfer.

Houllier has not covered himself in glory with this list and there are a lot of duds, but Diomede must rank up there as among the worst. Diouf only gets above him because he was complete pond life and cost more, but this deal was a serious dud.
