The Camaroon international had a much more successful career for his nation than he did for Liverpool, where he lasted just three seasons and was never good enough to nail down a regular slot.

Jamie Carragher never really rated Rigobert Song, who was physically up to the challenge but was continually caught out of position. 13 games in his first season followed 21 in his second but just four in his third as Song was shipped off to West Ham.

Another one of the failed 2002 signings, Bruno Cheyrou was called the new Zidane but then flopped and lasted just two seasons with Liverpool.

He was also compared to Robert Pires and Houllier pleaded for more time for his midfielder to embed in the side.

Cheyrou made 48 appearances in his two campaigns and there were a few good times along the way, but Cheyrou never really did the business with the Reds. Two goals against Newcastle in the FA Cup was a rare happy moment for the midielder, who left for Marseilles and Bordeaux on loan before Stade Rennais signed him on a permanent deal.
