Liverpool April Fools: Top 3 foolish mistakes they made in 2020
Adrian kicking the ball straight to Atletico Madrid in the lead up to their Anfield goal
We’ve seen one mistake made by the medical staff and management that resulted in the loss of a player for a prolonged period of time, but this error by Adrian is one that cuts a lot closer to the bone.
Roberto Firmino had just scored the goal that was going to put Liverpool through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League and possibly a third final in three years when the Spanish reserve goalkeeper decided to boot the ball directly to the opposition.
It was a mistake that resulted directly in Marcos Llorente scoring Atletico’s first of the night, and the goal that ultimately decided the tie.
Adrian had created the conditions that lead to our elimination from the Champions League and that hurts.
He’d done something similar against Chelsea in the FA Cup, and we all thought (or hoped) that it would just one one ‘to get it out of his system.’ Never again.
All of a sudden, those who were calling Adrian’s transfer from West Ham as a bit of genius and who questioned the Hammers for letting him go seemed a bit silly. His deficiencies were laid there on the table, in black and white.
It might even be the last thing he does for Liverpool.
