Former Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has just won the Belgian title with Club Bruges – could it give Liverpool hope for the future?
The Pro League has just announced that it will be cancelled, reported the BBC, and the table toppers will be crowned winners. This could boost Liverpool chances of winning the Premier League.
Bruges had one round of regular fixtures left to be played, before the league broke off into a series of play-offs. Their board of directors decided that this was the best course of action, and it will be made official on the 15th of April.
Simon Mignolet‘s club are 15 points clear of second placed Gent, in a situation that echoes the one Liverpool find themselves in.
We’ll have to wait and see what legal outcomes there are, but it could pave the way for the rest of the continent to call the season off and name current league leaders as champions.
This wouldn’t be an ideal situations for some countries, however, especially Italy and Germany – who are experiencing exciting title run-ins.
But it is an interest decision, and one we should keep an eye on as the COVID-19 pandemic progresses across Europe.
It’s a happy situation for Simon Mignolet to find himself in, one season after he left Liverpool and missed out on the first top fight title in 30 years.
In March the Daily Mail reported that the goalkeeper had no regrets in leaving the Reds for Belgium as playing takes priority – and that’s something you can’t blame him for.
Mignolet trained hard the whole time he was at Anfield and never kicked up a fuss when he was left out of the side for the whole of 2018/2019.
He’s played 27 games this season, keeping a credible 16 clean sheets in the process and made Champions League and Europa League appearances.
It appears as if his decision to quit Liverpool for first team football didn’t turn out so bad after all.
