Two birds with one stone

We know Liverpool need another if they want to be able to compete across multiple fronts – the league, several cup competitions and Champions League.

That’s why Timo Werner has been extensively linked with a move to Merseyside. Not only this season, but after his performances in 2017/2018 as well. But perhaps he’d have a little less versatility than something Raheem Sterling could provide, who would be able to provide an option on the left and right as well as being able to feature in the false 9 or shadow striker role.

Divock Origi managed to pull a rabbit out the hat a few times in 2018/2019 but he hasn’t been at the same level this season, while we’ve lost out on Xherdan Shaqiri due to his multiple injury problems.

However, you can see a reality in which neither of those players are at the club whenever 2020/2021 starts. Shaqiri looks like he’s going be on the way out, and maybe Origi will after a disappointing campaign.

There are sides who’ll take the Belgian, and if a decent offer comes along I wouldn’t bet against Edwards turning down a deal.

Despite the big money and the huge transfer fee that Sterling would command, he could do the squad role of two players. Any deal to sell Shaq or Origi would bring in a decent wedge, and get two first team wages off the books – thus lessening the financial impact of Sterling.
