Liverpool have been linked with an astonishing double swoop for two Bundesliga stars – neither of which are Timo Werner!

There might be no Premier League football going on but that doesn’t mean Liverpool aren’t planning for the future – anything less would be negligent.

And more news has filtered out of Germany that Michael Edwards has got his eye on an astonishing double swoop of players, which might become a trio if Werner is landed.

Gladbach duo Marcus Thuram and Denis Zakaria have been linked with a transfer to Anfield by Gladbachlive.de in a move that would raise eyebrows.

Forward Thuram and midfielder Zakaria have been enjoying excellent campaigns for Marco Rose as the former Salzburg manager has put his stamp on the Bundesliga. The side are currently in fourth on 49 points, only five behind league leaders Bayern Munich – who have 55.

In 25 appearances, Marcus Thuram has scored six goals and registered eight assists. Denis Zakaria is a more destructive defensive midfielder but he’s still managed to hit the back of the net twice and set up a further two goals.

Both are the perfect age for Liverpool at 22 and 23. They’ve got plenty of room for development, have already been working in a similar system to Jurgen Klopp and have played a good amount of first team games for a young age.

However, it’s unlikely that it would come cheap. Gladbach are unlikely to want to lose two of their finest young players, who are both vital to the first team, for cheap.

Getting Marcus Thuram and Denis Zakaria in the summer would surely cost in excess of £100 million. Transfermarkt has Zakaria valued at £40.50m and Thuram at £25.20m, but there’s no way the side will allow someone to poach them for their going rate.

But there’s plenty to be pleased about with this transfer rumour, and I wouldn’t be too disappointed if Liverpool managed to bag the pair.
