1. Alan Kennedy
After impressing with Newcastle United, Kennedy joined in 1978 for a transfer fee of £330,000. He had a bad debut against Queen’s Park Rangers but later became an integral player for the club, forming a strong partnership on the left flank with another Kennedy, Ray until the latter’s departure.
The Englishman often scored some very important goals that included one in the 1981 League Cup Final against West Ham and the late winner in the European Cup final against Real Madrid that very year. He also scored the winning penalty in the shootout of the 1984 European Cup Final against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.
Kennedy was an integral player for Liverpool during his time there and won 14 trophies in eight years including five League titles and two European Cups. He left the club in 1986 with 359 matches and 20 goals to his name.
Following his departure from Liverpool, Kennedy had short spells at several clubs before retiring from football in 1994. Unsurprisingly, he was among the 100 Players that Shook the Kop.
Due to Kennedy’s impressive performances and his role in Liverpool’s successes during the late 70s and 80s, he is the best left-back in the club’s history in my opinion as of now. However, if Robertson manages to stay for another 7-8 years0, he could well surpass him.
