Steven Gerrard wants Liverpool man on a free
Rangers manager Steven Gerrard wants to sign a Liverpool man on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of the current season.
Football Insider reported that Liverpool would be willing to let Nathaniel Clyne leave for nothing when his deal runs down – and Gerrard could be on hand to make another raid at Anfield.
The right-back has fallen out of favour under Jurgen Klopp but that doesn’t make him a bad player. His strengths just don’t align with how the German needs our full-backs to operate – mainly, Nathaniel Clyne isn’t a good enough attacker.
However, he is a good defender and he’ll be more than good enough to feature regularly for Rangers. His loan spell with Bournemouth proved that the former England international is more than up to the pace of the Premier League and Gerrard could take advantage of that.
The former Liverpool star has made the most of his Merseyside past and continues to cherry pick talent from Anfield. Over the past we’ve seen Ryan Kent, Jon Flanagan and Sheyi Ojo are with the Glasgow outfit now while Ovie Ejaria spent time there last season.
Nathaniel Clyne signed for the Reds in 2015 and has made 103 appearances, but his horrendous injury history has worked against him in recent years. The right-back has missed 89 games since 2017 thanks to a back and knee injury – said Transfermarkt.
Despite missing out on a fee for Clyne, it would be good to see the defender move on and continue his career with a good club. There’ll be no Liverpool fan out there who wishes the player ill – especially after he essentially lost two seasons of his whole career to injury.
Rangers should face competition for his signature and there are a host of Premier League sides out there who would benefit from having the ex-Saint in his side.
