One look at Steven Gerrard’s first ever goal from Liverpool is all it takes to know this was a special youngster and someone who would go far.
After making his debut in the 1998/1999 season, it took the Liverpool legend until the next campaign before he scored for the first time.
But when Steven Gerrard hit the back of the net in a 4-1 win against Sheffield Wednesday, all it took was one glance at the strike and you’d understand what a special player this lanky, long legged, skinny midfielder would be.
In many ways, this wasn’t your standard Stevie G goal. He didn’t hit it from absolutely miles away and watch it whistle into the net.
It was more of a slalom style, Lionel Messi dribble of a goal – which we don’t associate the midfielder with.
He picked the ball up from Rigobert Song just past the halfway line and looked up and saw himself in acres of space, which he drove into. Gerrard went around the outside of one defender and was faced with another, who was bamboozled with a feint inside before Stevie took the ball around the outside before cutting a shot back across the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

From just inside Wednesday’s half to having the ball in the back of the net in eight seconds. What a way to introduce yourself to the Premier League.
Steven Gerrard went on to score 120 more times in the top flight and 185 more goals for Liverpool in all competitions, as well as a further five for LA Galaxy in his one campaign away from Merseyside.
This is a player who hit some fantastic, beautiful goals but this one should rank up there with his very best. It displayed a player on the brink of something special and it showed the world what he can do.
