A £65 million Liverpool transfer target would only leave his team for ‘a much bigger club’ as speculation mounts over his future.

Sevilla only signed the player in the summer but he’s done so well that the Express has linked the man with a move to a ‘bigger’ club like Liverpool, whatever that means.

Diego Carlos only joined the La Liga outfit for £13.50 million in the summer but could be sold for five times that price whenever the transfer window opens again.

The Brazilian has enjoyed an excellent rise up the football ladder and it was only four years ago that he was turning out for Estoril in the Portuguese second tier before moving to French side Nantes for £1.17 million in 2016.

With 31 appearances in all competitions, Diego Carlos has quickly established himself as one of the key men in Sevilla’s defence. But he would be open to moving to Liverpool, even if he’s not personally aware of the interest in him.

He told Estadio Deportivo: “If I ever leave Sevilla, it would be to go to a much bigger club, because Sevilla is already great.”

Speculation linking the Reds with defenders won’t quite down until something happens with the future of Dejan Lovren. Lovren is the fourth choice under Jurgen Klopp and is prime to move on whenever this current season is completed.

But is there any point bringing in a £65 million player to replace someone who isn’t going to get in the Liverpool first team? Diego Carlos wouldn’t replace Joe Gomez, that’s for sure, while it’s unlikely that Joel Matip would drop out of the reckoning in the short-to-medium term.

And where would that leave Sepp van den Berg and Ki-Jana Hoever? The two starlets are on the edge of the first team and this would delay their introduction to senior football.
