The Liverpool Echo has written that a Manchester United star could be the ‘new Fabinho’ after impressing under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season.

They have written an article looking at some possible reinforcements for the summer, and compared a United player to Liverpool star Fabinho.

At first look, it’s a surprise that Fred would be linked with a move to Anfield and given such a glowing recommendation.

Fab is an elite defensive midfielder who has helped transform how Jurgen Klopp’s team has performed since his arrival. Alongside Alisson and Virgil van Dijk, the former AS Monaco man helped instal a steal spine in this team.

After arriving from Shakhtar Donetsk for £50 million, the Brazilian was written off as being an expensive failure but has improved since that difficult first campaign.

That has led the Echo to say: “He presses well on his own and he could be the Fabinho for a side.”

But do Liverpool need another Fab? With a competitive midfield, there isn’t a lot of room to bring another player into a squad. There’s barely enough football to go around the current group as it is as Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have struggled for games.

While Fred could play the back-up role to Fabinho, there’s no point going big for someone who isn’t going to be a first team regular.

Plus, would you want to sign someone from Manchester United? There’s a reason transfers don’t happen between massive rivals and it would be difficult for the former Ukrainian Premier League star.

The 27-year-old has played 64 times for the Red Devils since arriving at the start of last season and has nine caps for Brazil. In some ways, he is a man on the up but he still wouldn’t be a good fit for Liverpool and there are plenty of targets out there who’d be a better fit.
