Joe Gomez is the most improved player of 2020
Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is the most improved player of 2020 after a difficult start to the campaign.
At the start of 2019/2020 we all expected Liverpool to anchor the defense with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, but things didn’t go the way of the young England international and he was swifty relegated to fourth choice.
Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren took turns partnering the Dutchman but eventually injuries took their toll and the former Charlton lad was back in.
We’ve always known he had talent and potential but it’s been a long time coming to see it regularly from Gomez, who was in fine form before Burnley broke a bone in 2018/2019 and missed 19 games.
That was incredibly frustrating and came at the wrong time for Liverpool and the youngster, who struggled to reclaim that form and allowed Matip and Lovren to creep in.
But since Jurgen Klopp put him back in the side, things have changed dramatically. Joe Gomez is back to his end – and if anything has surpassed those levels – as him and van Dijk have combined to keep nine clean sheets in a row before the West Ham and Bournemouth games.
It’s good to see the 22-year-old getting regular minutes and learning from the best. In a strong squad packed full of player who are in their peak years, the most improved category is pretty tough to pick from.
We could have thought about Jordan Henderson, but that doesn’t really tell the full story of his form. He hasn’t really improved, rather everyone just seems to notice his contribution more.
You could make a case for Trent Alexander-Arnold, but the right-back has just retained his supersonic form from last season rather than building on it.
That’s why we’ve decided to name Joe Gomez as the most improved Liverpool player of 2020.
