Liverpool’s 6-1 defeat to Stoke City: Where are they now
By Minh Nguyen
Lucas Leiva
Although he was a popular figure at the club, there were feelings that Lucas was on his way out of the club. He was starting to fall out of favor in the first-team and was getting up there in age. Yet, he decided to stay and had a bit of a resurgence in the 2015-16 campaign.
Even though Lucas wasn’t a preferred starter, he was the Reds’ “Mr. Reliable” as he managed to rack up 40 appearances—always putting in solid shifts. However, as Klopp started to rebuild Liverpool, Lucas started to fall lower on the pecking order. So, after ten years at Anfield, the Brazilian finally departed with a £5 million transfer to Lazio. At the end of the season, he received a Special Recognition Award for his time at the club.
In Italy, Lucas has been nothing short of brilliant. He quickly established himself as a top player in Serie A by winning Lazio’s Player of the Year in his first season. The Italian side has grown exponentially since the Brazilian’s arrival and now they are on track to end Juventus’ reign in Italy.
Joe Allen
The poor outing against Stoke was an anomaly for Allen who was usually one of the more consistent performers. Despite his reliability, the Welshman mainly featured off the bench when Klopp took over. Yet, he was still impressive and actually had his best goal-scoring season for the Reds. He also featured prominently in the League Cup finals run.
But, it was clear Allen had a desire to play regular first-team football. After a successful Euro 2016 campaign for Wales, the Welshman was a wanted man and was eventually sold to none other than Stoke City for £13 million. The midfielder got his wish with the Potters as he became a staple in the starting XI. Even after relegation, Allen remained loyal and stayed with the club, where he still plays today.
Jordan Henderson
Every Liverpool fan should know where Henderson is now. He took over Gerrard’s job as captain the following summer and is the only player from this side to still feature regularly today.
The following two seasons would be tough for the new skipper. He was riddled with injuries and was often criticized by fans for his negative and unexciting play. However, he was able to turn his fortunes around in the 2017/18 season, featuring in 41 games while leading the Reds to a Champions League final.
Despite the disappointment of Kyiv, they returned the next campaign, and Henderson became the fifth Liverpool captain to lift the Champions League trophy. Now, the skipper is the favorite to win Player of the Year in a record-breaking season for the Reds.
