Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold is in the news for his comments on Jadon Sancho and a possible transfer, except it’s not news.

It’s a story that has somehow picked up headlines despite being so banal and boring the toffs up the history centre would have rejected it for being too dull. Welcome to Liverpool in 2020.

Trent Alexander-Arnold said Jadon Sancho would make the side better and went on to call the Borussia Dortmund side a ‘ special talent.’

Alexander-Arnold is right, obviously, because Sancho is really, really good and would make Liverpool a better squad. Maybe not a better side, straight away, but he’d definitely improve the overall depth.

All that is so obvious. Footballer X calling Footballer Y good at kicking shouldn’t dominate headlines in the way that it has, but this is the cornoavirus lockdown and we’ll all desperate for a nugget here and there.

This is the biggest non-news, news story out there. Alexander-Arnold could have called a whole host of elite players ‘special’ and said they’d improve Liverpool. If asked about Lionel Messi, or Neymar or Kevin de Bruyne the answer would have been the same.

It doesn’t need to spark a hundred faux transfer rumour articles though.

You’d be more worried if the right-back couldn’t identify  game changing transfer. If Trent had been asked if Sancho was brilliant and would improve Liverpool and he’d replied ‘nah’ that would have sparked more headlines than this.

So let’s be thankful that Alexander-Arnold said the only possible thing he could have said, at least it shows that he’s got brains in his skull and eyes in his head.

Let’s also look forward to a time when this doesn’t have to be splashed around Twitter and the internet like it’s a scoop with the CIA confessing that they had JFK assassinated in Dallas.
