Liverpool midfielder Pedro Chirivella has no regrets over how his career has gone so far, despite his contract with the club winding down.
The Spaniard joined Liverpool from Valencia in 2013 but has only started once in the Premier League, and now it appears as if that time at Anfield will draw to a close.
Reports from earlier in the season seemed to indicate that Pedro Chirivella has going to be offered fresh terms, but either that has been scuppered or COVID-19 has put the breaks on negotiations because as it stands the 22-year-old will be a free agent come July.
Despite making just 11 appearances for the first team in seven years, the midfielder doesn’t regret moving to Merseyside. In fact, it looks like he’s loved it.
His first few years were spent on loan with Go Ahead Eagles and Willem II in the Netherlands, but over the past 18 months Chirivella has trained more with the first team than ever before. And it’s through those sessions that he’s been able to see the quality of the rest of the squad first hand.
"He told Marca: “The midfield is a very high level, world-class players and it is very difficult to get in to. Fabinho, [Jordan] Henderson, [Georginio] Wijnaldum – spectacular footballers from whom [I am] proud to learn every day. I try to focus on everyone to improve.”"
Chirivella has lead the FA Cup and Carabao Cup teams through the quality of his performances. At times, he’s been the oldest member of the side and he’s certainly looked the part – that won’t harm his chances of finding a new team when football resumes.
Having Liverpool on his CV will do the Spaniard the world of good, too. This is a man who has trained relentlessly under Jurgen Klopp and picked up tips from the best in the business.
If he was a few years younger, there’s every chance Chirivella could have had a decent career with Liverpool. But we’ve seen that Klopp won’t keep players around to make up the numbers, especially at delicate stages of their career.
And so we’ll probably have to say goodbye to the man who barely featured but regrets nothing.
