New Chelsea arrival and Ajax star Hakim Ziyech has caused a legion of Liverpool fans to laugh at his most recent comments.
Hakim Ziyech missed his big chance to play against Liverpool when Ajax bombed out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage when they lost to Tottenham Hotspur.
They were never supposed to lose that match. The Eredivisie side were the darling of the tournament after they thrashed Real Madrid and took their exciting, young squad to new heights.
But it all unravelled against Spurs. Ajax went into the second-leg of the game with a thin, 1-0 advantage. Very quickly, the Dutch side expended their lead to 3-0 but then Lucas Moura scored an incredible hat-trick, including the winner in the 96th minute, to sink the Amsterdam giants.
That win took Spurs through to the final to face Liverpool, and we all know what happened there.
But Hakim Ziyech thinks he could have re-written history and those comments have got fans chuckling away.
According to Sportskeeda, the new Stamford Bridge arrival thinks that Ajax would have beaten Liverpool had they not blown their massive lead.
"He said: “Certainly we could have beaten Liverpool if we had qualified for the Champions League final last year”"
These sorts of hypothetical never go down well. The Dutch side would have been an interesting one to play and they certainly looked better than Tottenham throughout the two legs, and they had already beaten Madrid.
But just two seasons before they got soundly dismissed by Manchester United in the Europa League final and Liverpool are a much better team.
Spurs managed to hit three against a shell-shocked Ajax but then couldn’t find the back of the net against Liverpool as Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi scored to give Jurgen Klopp a 2-0 win.
There’s no doubt that Ziyech is a great player and that team was good, but they were never going to beat Alisson, Fabinho and the rest of them that night.
