Jonjo Shelvey was right to not hang around
Former Liverpool starlet Jonjo Shelvey is sad that he left the club when he did, but he was never going to make it at Anfield.
According to Sky Sports, via Goal, the Newcastle United midfielder has some regrets about the manner in which he said goodbye to Liverpool.
Jonjo Shelvey says he pushed too hard, too early in his quest to play games for the Reds and his search for first team football took him to Swansea City at a young age.
He was just 21-years-old when he moved down to Wales after playing 69 games for Liverpool, as well as an outstanding six-goal loan spell at Blackpool that saw him play 10 times.
Shelvey, however, would never have made it at Anfield.
While he possesses the talent – anyone can see that – he doesn’t have the application required to turn a good Premier League footballer into a great one.
His career is littered with regrets. This is a man that is a far better player, on a technical level, than Jordan Henderson. But he’s had a worse career and has been shown up by the man from Sunderland, who works incredibly hard to maximise every ounce of talent he has.
The worst thing is, Shelvey already knows he’s wasting his skills – and so does everyone around him.
Newcastle teammate Matt Ritchie has been quoted as saying Shelvey could play for Barcelona or Real Madrid if he pulled his act together and got his head down. But the former Liverpool lad just can’t be bothered.
That’s not the type of attitude that would have led to success at Liverpool, no matter how long he stuck around for. Shelvey could have waited for his chance for 10 years and it still wouldn’t have come, so it’s probably better for all involved that he took off to Swansea when he did.
